This is a list of words that I believe you should know, mostly just in general because they are good words to know and integrate into your current vocabulary, but also if you read my blog and come across a word you are unfamiliar with, it will most likely be here. Mind you, these are my own definitions, so if you have problems with the way I define the word, please let me know and I will consider changing it.
Let’s start with the basics:
Queer: Someone who falls underneath the LGBT+ umbrella.
Transgender: A transgendered individual is generally one who feels that their gender does not fit their physical sex.
Transsexual: Someone who has transition “fully” from one sex to another. I suggest keeping away from this word as it sparks controversy.
Transition: The definition of this word is debatable. Generally, it is used to explain a physical change from one sex to another through surgery, hormones and legal documents, but some people use it to explain their personal journey with their identity.
Trans*: Used to include all binary and non-binary gender identities.
Gender Identity: The label one would give themselves to mark their gender. (Example: FtM, MtF, male, female, genderqueer, androgynous, neutros, ect.)
Sexual Identity/preference/orientation: Who you are sexually attracted to.
FtM: Female-to-male transgendered person.
MtF: Male-to-female transgendered person.
Pronouns: Words used to address people. A few examples would be “he, him, his”, “she, her, hers”, “they, them, theirs” and “ze, hir”.
Homosexual: Generally, binary identified people who are attracted to the same binary identity, although that is debatable.
Bisexual: Being attracted to males and females.
And here come the more obscure words:
Cisgendered: Someone whose gender identity matches their physical sex.
Genderqueer: A person who identifies differently from male or female.
Androgynous: Presenting or identifying as both genders.
Intersexed: One who is born with sex chromosomes, external genitalia or an internal reproductive system that is not considered “standard” for either male or female. (http://www.ohio.edu/lgbt/resources/trans101.cfm)
Two-Spirit: A Native-American word for someone who is in between masculinity and femininity.
FAAB: Female Assigned At Birth (a nicer word for female bodied people.)
MAAB: Male Assigned At Birth (a nicer word for male bodied people.)
Pansexual: Being attracted to people, gender being irrelevant.
Omnisexual: Very similar to pansexuality.
Asexual: Having very little or no sexual attraction to people. (NOTICE: This does not mean that asexual people are incapable of having romantic feelings towards others. Sexual preference and romantic preference are not always linked.)
—Romantic: Anything that ends in “romantic” instead of “sexual” refers to the romantic attraction to others, rather than the sexual which is not always relevant.
Misgendering: Assuming the wrong gender.
And, currently, this is all I can think of. If I mention a word and you are unsure of the meaning, please feel free to send me a question in my ask box about it. The same goes for any arguments you have for any of my definitions. I try to be as inclusive as possible, but I also am not aware of every and all terms. If I am missing anything, please let me know so I can fix that.
Thank you!
